What AMD CPU should I upgrade to for better RAM performance?

I built my PC about a year ago with the following components: MSI X670E Gaming Plus wifi motherboard, AMD 7700X CPU with a Thermalright Peerless 120 cooler, 4x16GB Corsair DDR5 6400 RAM, and an ASUS 5070 TI graphics card. I've also got a Corsair RM750E PSU. Recently, I bought a 3D scanner and need to upgrade my RAM to at least 64GB. However, I found out that my RAM isn't compatible with the 7700X's memory controller, causing my speeds to drop to about 3000MHz for stability. I'm looking for recommendations on an AMD CPU that can better utilize my current RAM configuration, ideally without having to buy more expensive 32GB sticks. I'm considering the Ryzen 9 9900X and would like to keep the upgrade cost under $450.

Honestly, you might want to consider selling your current CPU, motherboard, and RAM to start fresh. Since you're already hitting close to 100% CPU usage, you could look for a stronger CPU. The 7700X has decent resale value, and DDR5-6400 RAM is in high demand right now. If you invest the $450 you mentioned, you could upgrade to a Ryzen 9900X along with a new motherboard and just 2x32GB RAM sticks. This could be a solid combination for your needs.

That might be my best option based on what you've said. I could even run my current 2x16 sticks until I manage to buy the 2x32s, and sell the rest to a friend who's been thinking about building a gaming PC. Thanks for the tip!

That sounds like a solid plan! Plus, the resale values provide some flexibility.

Unfortunately, all the AM5 CPUs have the same memory controller, which doesn't particularly handle four RAM modules well. So, upgrading to another AM5 CPU may not solve your issue. You might need a more drastic change in your setup.

Actually, that’s not entirely accurate. The upcoming Ryzen 8000 series will have new memory controllers that might handle RAM better. Just keep that in mind for future upgrades.

Great, another thing to work around. Thanks for letting me know.
