Hey everyone! I've been using Atom for my text editing needs because I really liked its user interface and experience. Unfortunately, it's no longer supported, so I'm on the lookout for alternatives. I'm running Windows with WSL and mostly coding in C and Assembly. I'm looking for something very minimal, like the default text editor you'd find on Ubuntu.
I've tried Notepad++ (which I found pretty ugly by default), Codeblocks (too slow to load and similar issues to Notepad++), and VSCode (which feels overwhelming with all its features).
I want something simple that resembles the Ubuntu environment for exams—basically, no auto-complete or extra features, and I can handle compiling and debugging through the terminal in WSL.
I've heard about Zed text editor, but it's not available for Windows yet. Is there any way to run the Linux version on WSL? What I really need is a lightweight Sublime-like text editor that's free. Any suggestions?

If you’re comfortable with command line tools, you might want to check out Helix Editor. It's a great choice if you don’t mind a terminal-based editing experience.
Have you considered neovim? It's perfect for WSL and can be lightweight or more feature-rich, depending on how you set it up. I switched from VSCode, and I'm loving it. Plus, it can be customized to look however you want, so you can keep it simple if that's what you prefer.
You can definitely use WSL with any Linux distribution, but by default, it comes with Ubuntu. If you're looking for something simple, just open up nano—it's the default editor in Ubuntu. If you prefer a GUI, you can install gedit for Gnome or Kate for KDE in WSL too. Personally, I'm a fan of vim; it's lightweight, but it does have a learning curve.
Honestly, dte is probably the best barebones text editor around right now. I've been using it every day and it's been great for my needs.
NeoVim is the way to go, dude! It's lightweight and powerful, perfect for coding without all the fluff.
