What are the best entry-level paths into DevOps and Cloud?

I'm currently studying my second Master's in Cloud-Native Computing in Ireland, after completing a conversion Master's in Software Development. I also hold a Bachelor's in IT. My focus now is on cloud and DevOps topics, where I'm learning about microservices, Docker, Kubernetes, and AWS basics, along with some Python and Java. Although I've done one internship in data science, I find that traditional software engineering paths (like coding assessments) may not be for me. I'm curious about entry-level roles in DevOps and Cloud. Are positions like Cloud Support Engineer, Junior Platform Engineer, or SRE reasonable options, and which support roles could be practical stepping stones? Also, I'm studying Generative AI and considering AWS certifications; should I start with the Cloud Practitioner certification or jump straight to an associate-level cert? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!

Targeting positions like Cloud Engineer or cloud-focused tech roles can be a great move. From what I’ve seen, employers care more about your skills and experience than about how many degrees you have. Your Bachelor's should be enough, especially if you can showcase practical abilities. Networking is also key, so try to get internships or real-world projects to boost your resume!

Networking sounds crucial! I'll definitely prioritize it while looking for opportunities.

Honestly, I’d recommend getting practical experience rather than focusing purely on degrees. Since DevOps combines various skills, having a background in system administration or even tech support could really help you. A role like Junior SysAdmin or L2 Tech Support for cloud-related tasks can build your experience in areas that are crucial for DevOps work. Just having degrees won’t get your foot in the door; most employers prioritize what you can actually do over formal qualifications.

Thanks for the advice! I really want to get hands-on experience, so I’ll look into those roles.

You don’t necessarily have to start in a support role. Focus on building real projects, maybe even start a home lab for practicing with the tools you’re learning about. You might find that employers are more interested in what you’ve built rather than your titles. For AWS certs, starting with the Cloud Practitioner can give you a solid foundation before moving on to the Solutions Architect associate level, but it’s also okay to jump straight in if you feel ready.

I appreciate the tips on certification paths! A home lab sounds like a fun way to learn too.
