What are the risks of using my damaged laptop?

I accidentally left my expensive laptop on the roof of my car, drove off, and it fell off and got run over multiple times. When I found out this morning, I was surprised to see it still turns on, despite being quite beaten up. My main concern is whether using it now poses risks of further damage, especially since it's visibly damaged on the corners and some keys feel off. I'd appreciate any advice on what to do next!

If you're able to start it up, you're mostly in the clear. However, keep a close watch on the laptop. If it starts overheating, definitely get it checked out by a professional. Better safe than sorry!

If your laptop powers on and you can log in, it sounds like the storage might be okay, which is great for your data. The biggest risk here is whether the battery is safe. If it got damaged, it could potentially catch fire, which would be really bad for your data and your home. I'd suggest backing up your files ASAP. Also, keep an eye on the charging behavior and check for any swelling in the battery.

Shake it a bit—can you hear anything rattling around? If not, go ahead and switch it on and see if it functions properly. But be cautious; if it feels off, get it looked at.

Yeah, I can hear a bit of noise from it but based on the damage outside, I wouldn't be surprised if it has issues. I tried uploading pictures but it didn't work, just my luck!

Honestly, there's no way a laptop that was run over would keep working, right? The motherboard is likely shattered inside.

You can definitely check if everything works, but since it was run over, having it checked out might be a good idea. If it doesn’t need to be on, just keep it shut off until it’s inspected.
