I have some cables from a Deepcool RF 120M fan, but I'm not sure what they are called. Do modern motherboards have a connector for these cables? I'd like to know if I can plug them in directly or if I need an adapter.

The cable is a 3-pin fan header, usually marked as 'sys_fan' on the motherboard, which is typically used for regular fan connections. Just a heads up, the cable you have might be specific for RGB instead of just standard fan use.
It sounds like you might be dealing with an ARGB cable. You generally can’t plug these directly into your motherboard. Check your fan manual for specific connection details; you might need an ARGB hub or an adapter cable to get everything working right.
I think those fans connect to their own hub, which might mean direct motherboard connection isn’t possible.
Actually, many new motherboards do have ARGB headers, so that could work if you have the right setup.
Deepcool tends to use proprietary connections for their RGB products. Are you sure that’s the RF120? That model normally uses a 4-pin 12V RGB connector. Their A-RGB fans use a distinct connector, but they often come with an adapter cable to fit an A-RGB header, so check for that!
Oh, I see! So it might be more about the RGB function than just fan speed.
