What can be done about a website using an expired domain to promote spam?

I'm a freelance web designer and used to handle a client's website for over five years. The previous web designer purchased the domain for them. After the client sold their business, the new owners bought a new domain and set up a new website, redirecting the old one to the new site. However, they later missed an important email about renewing the old domain, which someone else then bought. This new owner has put up a website filled with spam links that shows up in search results right under the new owners' legitimate site. The new owners sent a cease and desist letter to the individual who purchased the domain, but they haven't received a response and are increasingly worried about the situation. Has anyone dealt with something similar? What options do they have to get the spam website taken down?

This sounds like a case of cybersquatting — where someone registers a domain name related to a trademark or business without the right to do so. They might be able to file a complaint through WIPO if the case fits the criteria. Check out this guide [here](https://www.wipo.int/amc/en/domains/guide/) for more info. Essentially if the new domain owner is profiting off the brand or causing confusion, there's a chance they can get the domain back.
