What Can I Do If My School Is Dropping Mac Support?

I'm entering my final year of high school soon, and I've always used a Mac. However, my school is now planning to cut off support and network access for Apple devices, which leaves me worried. I'd prefer not to buy a new Windows laptop when the school year is only about 26 weeks long. Are there any workarounds I can use to stay connected without getting in trouble for using a Mac? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

One option is to use Parallels to run Windows on your Mac. This approach lets you create a virtual machine, so you can access what you need without switching laptops entirely. Just make sure you check if your Mac can handle it, especially if it has at least 8GB of RAM.

Could you give a bit more detail on that? I'm not super familiar with how to set up virtual machines.

Sounds good in theory! I've heard it works pretty well.

If you're worried about teachers noticing, maybe you could look into using a mobile hotspot. Just make sure it’s discreet, and check if you can mask your device details in any way.

That’s a good point; if they’re monitoring MAC addresses, that might be tricky. But I think some devices can do that—just have to get a bit creative.

Could be worth a try! Just watch for any rules about device identification on school networks.

It seems a bit extreme to block all non-Windows devices. Have they given any reason? It sounds like they might just be trying to enforce a product loyalty that doesn't really help students.

You should definitely talk to the IT department to clarify what ‘dropping support’ means. Sometimes, they just need you to have Windows installed, not necessarily a specific device. You might still find a way to connect your Mac.

How can they justify banning Apple devices altogether? It's unfair to students who can't just buy new devices, especially if they're claiming it's about student safety. They should consider the financial impact on everyone involved!

Exactly, it feels like they're just trying to push specific products. What about students who can’t afford to switch? Plus, it’s not like all tech in schools is equal anyway.

It sounds like a bad call from the school management. They need to rethink this.
