What do bad sectors on an SSD mean?

I recently bought a Netac portable SSD, and while backing up my data, I ran into issues where I couldn't write any data to it. So, I decided to run chkdsk /f to check for errors, and it reported that there were bad sectors but claimed to have repaired them. After running it again, it said everything was fine. However, a few days later, I faced the same issue. I ran chkdsk two more times — the first time it reported repairs made, but the second time, there were no issues detected. The confusing part is that when I check the drive using CrystalDiskInfo, it always says the health status is good. So I'm wondering: is this a problem with the software (file system), or is my SSD's hardware failing?

Could you share what parameters CrystalDiskInfo shows? A screenshot would help clarify the situation since its report may not be exhaustive regarding bad blocks.

CrystalDiskInfo shows all parameters within normal ranges, which is what confuses me! Typically, from my experience, SMART reports on mechanical hard drives reveal issues.

It sounds like your drive may be failing. I've experienced similar issues with an NVMe drive that Windows reported as having bad sectors, and it was confirmed as faulty by the manufacturer's diagnostic tool. You might want to consider reaching out to the manufacturer for an RMA—make sure to document any errors you find during checks.

Thanks for your input! I didn't buy it through an official channel, so returning might be a hassle. I think in the future I’ll stick to brands like Kioxia, Samsung, and Kingston purchased from official sources.
