What does it mean when my external hard drive shows as ‘Local Disk D’?

I have an encrypted external hard drive that was set up by my ex a few years back. When I connect it to my PC and enter the password, it shows the drive name, but I also see it labeled as 'Local Disk D', which I can't access. Why is that? Is it related to the encryption? I tried a USB and another external drive, and they don't show up with that 'Local Disk D' label since they're not encrypted. Thanks for any insights!

That's likely just a quirk of the encryption software. Some tools reserve a small partition for the decryption process, and often these partitions have restricted access. It's pretty common with certain encryption setups.

Ahhhh okay that makes sense. So basically normal. Thank you 🙂

It sounds like the hard drive was set up with an additional partition. If it's labeled 'Local Disk', it might be a Windows partition without the necessary permissions for your account to access. Totally normal, just quirky setup!

Ahh that explains it. So completely normal?

Some external hard drives have a hidden 'install' partition to provide drivers for older systems. This partition isn’t intended for normal access. I had a similar experience with a WD Passport that showed this before it stopped working. Just keep an eye on it!
