I'm a Senior Developer who's been considering a transition to a Solutions Architect (SA) role for a few years. I completed my SAA certification in 2023 and I've been working with AWS for the past decade. Recently, my work has shifted more towards managing AI agents, which isn't as fulfilling for me. Even our CDK processes are mostly driven by AI now. I'm curious about the landscape for SA roles in 2025—specifically regarding job security and overall job satisfaction. What are your thoughts?

The SA position has become diluted over the years. It used to attract highly experienced professionals who genuinely wanted to assist clients. Nowadays, it often feels like it’s filled with younger individuals more focused on promotions and titles rather than real impact.

As a Solutions Architect myself, I can tell you that this area is still expanding and remains critical. While AI can facilitate certain tasks, it doesn’t fully replace the need for human judgment in sales and understanding customer needs. Many clients often don't know what's best for them, so having a human touch in these discussions remains essential.

The SA role has definitely changed; there's much more emphasis on pre-sales activities and presentations than on raw AWS expertise these days. Whether that's enjoyable can really depend on the company culture. I've noticed that hiring is tough right now across the board.

From what I've observed, SA roles in Europe in 2025 still look solid, but the nature of the job is evolving. The traditional tasks of designing architectures are becoming more commoditized, especially with AI tools assisting in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) implementations. Strong SAs who excel will be those that can translate complex business problems into actionable insights considering constraints, trade-offs, security, and costs. If you enjoy engaging with customers and influencing decisions, there’s still a rewarding path in SA, but if you're looking for intense hands-on building, you might reconsider if it meets your expectations.
