What Happens If You Trade In an iPhone Without Resetting It?

A while back, I traded in my old iPhone to Apple, but I was young and a little nervous, so I forget to reset it first. I just powered it off and handed it over. Now I noticed that my iPhone is still linked to Find My iPhone, and it's showing up in another country. I'm curious about what would happen in a case like this, especially if there wasn't any passcode set. Does Apple take care of resetting the device before they resell it?

You might want to check if the device is still linked to your iCloud. If it is, you can remotely erase it from your iCloud settings, which is a good safety measure.

As someone with ten years in Apple retail, I can tell you that traded phones often go to third-party processors. They typically get recycled or sometimes sold in emerging markets. If it’s still showing on your iCloud, you can erase it from there too! But if it’s been a while since your trade-in, you’re probably in the clear.

When you trade in or send a device for repair, the first step is usually to wipe it clean. From what I understand, they make sure it’s reset before any further processing. So if you didn’t reset it, Apple would handle that once they receive it, ensuring your data is wiped before resale. That’s the practice here in Europe, at least.
