Hey everyone! I'm a new developer who's diving into Java and backend development. I've started researching Java certifications, but there are so many out there that it's hard to decide which ones are actually beneficial for someone just beginning their career. Could anyone share their recommendations on which certifications might be the best to pursue? Thanks a ton!

For newcomers in Java backend development, I'd highly recommend the Oracle Certified Professional (OCP): Java SE 17 Developer certification. It showcases in-depth knowledge of modern Java features like Streams and Lambdas. But if you’re aiming for practical backend work, a Spring Certified Professional certification can be even more beneficial since Spring is a standard in enterprise applications. Start with Java OCP, and later add cloud certifications or specialized Spring credentials as you progress.

Honestly, I believe what really matters is the quality of the projects you work on. Instead of focusing solely on certifications, you should focus on building projects and contributing to open-source work.

Some people say that Java certifications are basically useless. If you’re looking for something that will stand out on your resume, you might want to consider cloud certifications like AWS or Azure instead.

In my 15 years of Java development, I can't say I've ever met anyone with a certification. What's more important are your skills with libraries and frameworks like Spring and Hibernate, as well as understanding databases like PostgreSQL, and some DevOps concepts like Kubernetes and CI/CD.

If you’re just starting, the Oracle certification path is well recognized in the industry. Many new developers kick off with the Java Foundations Associate because it covers the basics, including OOP concepts. After that, you can advance to the Oracle Certified Associate, and finally the Oracle Certified Professional if you want to enhance your resume. But honestly, having real projects to show usually matters more than just certifications.
