What Linux Distro is Best for a Stable, Low-Maintenance Setup?

I'm currently using Ubuntu 25.10 on my old college laptop, mainly for online shopping and browsing. I've run into a kernel panic issue, which got me thinking about migrating to a more reliable distribution. I'm looking for a "set it and forget it" type of distro. I came across Gemini, which suggested Debian is mainly for servers, while recommending Fedora and Mint. However, I'm hesitant to go for Mint since it's based on Ubuntu and I'm looking for something different. Can anyone recommend a good stable Linux distribution that requires minimal upkeep?

Consider going for an LTS (Long Term Support) version of Ubuntu instead. The LTS editions get support for over 10 years, and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS is coming soon. It's a great choice if you want something stable.

You might want to avoid Ubuntu 25.10 since it's not an LTS version. Instead, try Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, Linux Mint, or even Debian. They are all solid choices for a low-maintenance system. Just keep in mind, even Mint’s HWE kernel gets frequent updates, which may lead to some issues on certain hardware setups.

Try Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE). It offers a user-friendly experience similar to Windows with the Cinnamon desktop. Plus, it combines fantastic stability with ease of use since it's not based on Ubuntu. I've been using it for years without any hassle.

I've heard good things about LMDE! Sounds like a perfect match for someone looking for a simple and stable setup.

If you want something that's really easy to use, I'd recommend Universal Blue's Bazzite distro. It's preconfigured for gaming but essentially offers a solid, immutable version of Fedora. This means all system files come in a single tested package, so you shouldn't have to worry about daily updates breaking your system—just keep an eye on the hardware!
