What Linux Distro Should I Choose for Gaming as a New User?

I'm looking to switch away from Windows 11, primarily due to a poor user experience and the recent changes that have frustrated me. My main focus is gaming, but I also do some light general use like watching videos and possibly school work. I've been considering a shift to Linux, although I'm quite inexperienced with it—my coding knowledge is very basic, mostly involving simple tweaks and fixes. After doing some research, I'm thinking about trying CachyOS, Bazzite, or Nobara. Here are some things I'm pondering:

1. I want to know if my gaming rig, which has a Ryzen 5 5600x and an RTX 3080 10GB, will perform better or worse on Linux, especially considering I've heard there's a chance of issues with Nvidia cards.

2. Since I'm quite new to Linux, is it a bad idea for someone with limited experience to make this switch? I want to learn, but I'm also cautious about messing things up.

3. I'm aiming for a distro that is user-friendly right from the start but allows for some customization down the line.

I'd appreciate any tips or recommendations on making this switch smoothly—I've wanted to do this for a while, and now I'm seriously considering my options!

For the smoothest experience, many recommend Ubuntu or Linux Mint—they’re not gaming-centric but are great for beginners. But since you’re considering CachyOS, I think it’s one of the best options. It’s Arch-based, so you’ll get quick access to updates and the helpful Arch wiki. Just remember, it may require a bit more terminal use for installations. As for Nvidia, it's improving, too! Give it a shot and see how you like it!

I'd recommend going with Ultramarine Linux KDE Edition. It's based on Fedora but comes with Nvidia drivers pre-installed, so you won't have to hassle with that. It’s pretty user-friendly and great for gaming—definitely worth a try!

Check out distrochooser.de to narrow down your options based on your needs. Once you find a few distros, look them up on distrowatch.com to see if they match what you want. Just remember, you can always switch later if it doesn’t feel right!

Hey! I started my Linux journey just a couple of months ago. What worked well for me was downloading a bunch of distros on a USB with Ventoy and testing them live before committing. I currently run Pop OS on my gaming laptop with Nvidia, and installing the right drivers was super easy. If gaming is your main focus, I’d suggest giving Pop OS a shot too, or you could try CachyOS and Bazzite for their gaming support. Just play around with them; it’s part of the fun!

I've been using CachyOS lately and it's surprisingly user-friendly for an Arch-based distro. It has a GUI for software installation, which is great for new users. I've heard good things about the performance enhancements too. If you're into customizing later on, I’d suggest KDE as your desktop environment!
