I'm trying to breathe new life into my 9-year-old Dell Inspiron 14-3000 series laptop, which currently has Windows 8.1 installed. Unfortunately, it's running really slow. Here are my specs:
- Intel i3 (4th gen)
- 4 Gb RAM
- 512 Gb HDD
- Nvidia Geforce 820M graphics

I'm looking for recommendations on a beginner-friendly Linux distro that will offer smoother performance and quicker boot times. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Honestly, adding an 8GB RAM stick can make a huge difference if you can find one relatively cheap. It will really help improve the performance of your laptop alongside whichever distro you choose.

If you want something super fast, give Void a try. I have a laptop with similar specs, and it runs smoothly.

You might want to check out Ubuntu Cinnamon or Xubuntu. Both are user-friendly and should perform well on your hardware. If you're comfortable with Linux, Debian Budgie is also a solid choice, though it's better if you don't need proprietary drivers. Good luck!

I've heard good things about Zorin OS Lite too. Is it a good option for beginners?

Bodhi Linux 7.0 HWE is another great option that should work well on those specs. It's lightweight and shouldn't lag much at all!
