What Makes TSMC Stand Out in Chip Manufacturing?

I've heard that TSMC is exceptional in producing the latest generation chips at scale. However, I've also come across information stating that ASML is the only company capable of manufacturing the machines needed for chip production. This raises a question: does TSMC purchase its machines from ASML? If so, what specifically does TSMC do that sets it apart? Why can't other companies just buy ASML machines, set up their own chip fabs, and start competing?

Building a chip factory isn't a small feat—it costs over $100 billion and takes years to complete! So, it's not just about having the machines; the whole setup is a massive investment.

TSMC really shines due to its ability to access low-cost capital and get preferential treatment when it comes to equipment. They're well-connected with a steady stream of clients who can't afford manufacturing missteps. It gives them an edge over others who might want to jump into the market.

There are definitely other companies like Samsung, Intel, and Micron that run their own manufacturing fabs. However, TSMC holds about 70% of the foundry market, particularly for cutting-edge technology. A lot of competitors focus more on microcontrollers that don’t require such advanced procedures.

Some say TSMC's dominance is partly a marketing tactic. Countries with older machines, like China and Russia, might catch up eventually. The competitive edge that TSMC has now is bolstered by Western companies—and the perception that they’re unbeatable may just be that—perception!
