What RAM Should I Get for My New 9950X3D Build?

Hey everyone! I'm building a new PC and it's been a while since my last build. I'll be using it for a mix of gaming, Lightroom, and some occasional video encoding. I'm planning to get a 9950X3D paired with a GIGABYTE X870E AORUS PRO motherboard. I've seen that I can use DDR5 RAM ranging from 6000 to 8000 MHz. I'm curious—does the higher speed noticeably boost performance? Also, I'm wondering about potential stability issues with RAM speeds above 6000 MHz, especially since I've seen a lot of OC mentioned. I think 64GB should be enough for my needs, as I've heard it's better to use just 2 sticks rather than 4 with AMD/AM5 setups. I'm aiming for something in the $200-250 range, but I'm also looking for good performance per dollar. I definitely don't want to drop $400 just for a tiny performance gain. Any advice?

For AMD and DDR5, the sweet spot is around CL30 at 6000 MHz for the best stability and performance. Given your usage, I recommend going for 64GB (using 2x32GB sticks). You'll have plenty of headroom for multitasking and heavy applications.

Thanks for the tip! Any reliable motherboard recommendations? I'm okay with spending $250-$400. The one I linked has good reviews, and I’d like something that’s solid with audio quality and overall stability. I'm considering an X870E series board since I also have a 5080 and think PCIe 5.0 is the way to go. I’m also debating whether to wait for the next Zen series, but I might not want to be an early adopter since they're not out until late next year or 2027.

If you're looking for a reliable board, the GIGABYTE X870E AORUS PRO you mentioned has decent reviews. Also, keep an eye on compatibility with your GPU and the features you need, like good audio chips. If you think you might wait for the next series, just make sure you're comfortable with your current setup for a while longer.

Check out the motherboard's QVL (Qualified Vendor List) to see which RAM is compatible. Sort it by speed, and pick a kit within your budget that has the lowest latency for that speed. Generally, the difference in RAM performance is minimal for most tasks, except for specific applications like Topaz Video Enhance AI. As for the 64GB, if you're not dealing with massive datasets often, you might find that 32GB is sufficient. But if you can afford it, 64GB won't hurt! Just keep an eye on the price.

With your 9950X3D, aim for either 32 or 64GB of RAM, and definitely go for DDR5-6000 with a CAS latency of 30 for optimal performance. This config will give you good stability and speed, plus headroom for any tasks you throw at it!

Exactly! That CL30 is key for getting the most out of your setup.
