What Should I Do About Mysteriously High Download Data on My Router?

Hey everyone! I've been dealing with some major internet slowdowns and random disconnections recently. My brother took a look at our router admin app and found an absolutely alarming figure: in just the last five days, we've supposedly used 22.9PB of download traffic, which seems to be linked to my phone. However, when I check my phone, my data usage doesn't reflect anything close to that—more like under 30GB. After noticing this, we reset our Wi-Fi password and factory reset the router to kick out any unwanted devices. While we managed to block the suspected device, it ended up blocking my phone too! My phone, a Samsung s25, shows up as an 'iPhone' on the router list at times, making this even more confusing. I'm really unsure how to proceed and I'm worried about my ISP possibly raising an eyebrow at that huge data number. What could be going on here? Is there any reason to panic? I'm not very tech-savvy and I'm looking for some advice!

It sounds like there might be a glitch in the app reporting those numbers. To push that much data, you'd need a ridiculously fast connection—like you're living inside a Google data center! It's likely just an error since even big data operations could never reach that level of traffic in your situation.

Right? It's mind-boggling! I mean, 22.9PB is an insane amount, it really doesn’t add up for a consumer router.

Exactly! The typical high-end home connection couldn’t handle that overload. Just keep your eyes peeled for any issues.

Honestly, unless you have a super high-end connection, I doubt it's accurate. For context, a gigabit connection maxes out around 10TiB daily—so 23PB isn't even remotely realistic unless you're running a major data center! You should be okay just keeping a watch on your network for now.

This is really reassuring, thanks! I’ll definitely keep monitoring it.

No problem! Just do regular checks on your network stats and keep an eye out for any strange activity.

Double-check the units on your router! Sometimes people mix up bits and bytes. PB vs. TiB is a big difference! Make sure that's what it's reporting, because if it’s an error in reading, it could clear everything up.

Good point! The router specifically lists PB, and it’s sorted correctly. It’s just baffling!

Yeah, it's wild! If you get any more info, definitely share—could be an interesting case!

Have you looked at the router's admin panel for logs? Seeing those might clear things up. Also, check your phone's data settings to make sure everything looks normal. If that number is right, you'd have to be using *massive* amounts of data—more than just streaming or browsing could consume.

I plan to check the logs once I get back home. It feels impossible for me to hit those levels!

For sure, it seems really off. As long as you keep everything secure, you should be good!
