What Should I Do After Accidentally Answering a Spam Call?

I recently made the mistake of answering a spam call when I was half asleep. I had already received a spam text from the same number and texted them 'STOP' before blocking them. However, I then got a call from a different number. I answered it, and after the caller mentioned something about a bank statement for someone named Damien, I quickly realized I had the wrong number and hung up. Now, I'm really worried that I might be in some sort of trouble. Is there anything I should be concerned about?

There are definitely some tricks scammers use, like asking if you can hear them to get you to say 'yes'. But what you did is really harmless. Just saying 'wrong number' and hanging up is no big deal. Plus, maybe if you actually were Damien, they'll stop calling!

If you're looking for ways to prevent spam calls in the future, I heard Apple is introducing an automated AI feature in iOS 26 to manage unknown or uncontacted numbers. If you've got an Android, some models already have this setup—you just need to activate it. It’s been great for me; I rarely get bothered by spam calls since my phone hangs up on them first.

You're totally fine! They want you to engage in a way that benefits them, but just answering is generally not dangerous. It might help to learn more about common scam techniques. Just remember never to call back a number you suspect might be from a scam, as those numbers can be really pricey.

No need to panic! Just answering a call won't put you at risk, especially since you didn’t share any personal info. The worst that might happen is they know your number is active and could increase the spam calls, but that’s about it.
