What should I do after accidentally downloading a suspicious program?

Hey everyone, I recently tried to download a 3D printing software called Orca Slicer that my friend recommended. Unfortunately, I ended up clicking on a scam website with a slightly different URL and downloaded the installer. When I opened the installer, it looked off, so I quickly closed it and deleted the file. I also realized the site was a scam after the fact. My question is, given that I opened the installer but didn't proceed with the installation, what steps should I take now? I'm using Windows 11 and had my core protection off at the time. I've run a quick offline scan with Windows Defender, but I didn't find anything suspicious, just a system restart. Any advice would be appreciated!

Just a heads up, make sure to always check the URL before downloading software. It’s easy to get tricked by similar names. If you haven't, uninstall any potentially suspicious programs right away, and definitely run a comprehensive malware scan. You might want to consider enabling some extra security features in the future, like two-factor authentication for your accounts, just in case!

If you're worried about potential malware, it's smart to take action. Even though you didn't complete the installation, running a full, in-depth scan with software like Malwarebytes alongside Windows Defender is a good idea. Also, consider changing your passwords for any critical accounts, just to be safe. Since you didn't fully install anything, you might be okay, but better safe than sorry! And next time, stick to official sources like OrcaSlicer.com or GitHub for downloads.

Sounds like you caught it just in time! Make sure you're using an admin account to have better control over installs. Since the User Account Control (UAC) prompted you about the unknown publisher before you opened it, that's a good sign you acted quickly. Just follow up with those scans and keep an eye on your system to be sure everything's running smoothly.
