What should I do if my Mac desktop stalls at startup?

My 2017 27" Mac desktop was working fine until I decided to shut it down. When I turned it back on, the usual Apple logo and loading bar appeared, but it seems to be stuck at the halfway point for over half an hour. There's also a repetitive noise that sounds like it's trying to boot something up. I'm unsure if I should force a shutdown or wait a bit longer. What would be the safest option?

It seems like there might be a problem with the hard drive, especially if you’re hearing that clicking noise. If it’s trying to boot, that’s a good sign, but I suggest taking it to a repair shop to get a professional opinion. Plus, upgrading to an SSD can really speed things up and get rid of that noise altogether.

It definitely sounds like your Mac is frozen. I'd recommend going ahead and forcing a shutdown. After that, try booting it up in safe mode to see if that helps resolve the issue.
