What should I upgrade for a smoother Oblivion experience?

Hey everyone! I built my PC about two years ago, and while it's been decent for my gaming needs, it's never truly been great. For instance, I've been playing The Witness, which I thought was a pretty low-requirement game, yet I'm stuck playing on low settings just to avoid frame drops and choppy screens. Now that the Oblivion remaster is out, I'm keen on upgrading my system. However, I'm unsure what would have the most significant impact for gaming. Should I look into upgrading my RAM or my GPU? I want to run Oblivion on medium to high settings. Here's my current setup:

- 16.0 GB RAM
- 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-12400F 2.50 GHz
- Radeon RX 6600
- 1TB SSD

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Also, maybe my current setup is good enough? I did a little research and it seems my PC should be able to handle AAA games, so why am I only able to play most games on low settings?

You might want to try running Oblivion first before making any upgrades! It’s available on Game Pass for $1 for two weeks, so you can see if it performs to your liking without spending any cash first.

If you're looking for performance boosts, the GPU is going to be your best bet. The RX 6600 is good, but upgrading to a more powerful GPU will give you a noticeable increase in frame rates—though GPUs are pretty pricey right now. Your i5 processor is solid, so no need to rush to upgrade that. Also, while 16GB of RAM is sufficient for most games, bumping it up to 32GB can offer a smoother experience overall, even if it only provides a slight FPS increase.

I appreciate the insight! I was hoping to upgrade my RAM since GPUs are so expensive right now. If I do decide to upgrade my GPU, how much difference would I see moving from an RX 6600 to an RX 6700 XT?
