I recently got a great deal on an RX 9070 XT and currently pair it with a Ryzen 5 5600 and 16GB of DDR4. I play at 1440p, including both newer releases and older games, and I'm wondering what upgrade would make the most sense next. Should I improve the CPU, add more memory, or move to a newer platform?

At minimum, consider a Ryzen 7 5800X, though the 5800X3D or 5700X3D is generally more attractive for gaming. Pair that with 32GB of memory and the system should handle 1440p high-refresh gaming very well, with some 4K gaming possible using upscaling.
Your upgrade path mainly depends on your budget. For the least expense, get a 5800X3D-class processor and more DDR4. If you’re willing to rebuild, a Ryzen 7 7800X3D or 9800X3D with an AM5 motherboard and DDR5 gives you a newer platform and more future upgrade options.
The CPU is probably the best place to start. A Ryzen 7 5800X3D would be a major upgrade for gaming while letting you keep your current motherboard and DDR4. I’d also move to 32GB of RAM when you can, especially if you play newer titles or multitask.
If you want to avoid switching to AM5, a 5800X3D is a sensible choice and should reduce CPU bottlenecks in high-refresh-rate gaming. A cheaper X3D chip can also be worthwhile if you find one under about $180.
