What Should My CPU’s Ideal Idle Temperature Be?

I've been playing around with PS3 emulation on my PC and keeping a close eye on the CPU temperatures using MSI center. I noticed that even when my PC is completely idle, the lowest temperature my CPU hits is around 130°F, usually closer to 140°F. From what I've read, many sources suggest that an ideal idle temperature is between 85°F and 120°F, which makes my average of 140°F a bit worrisome. My PC is only air-cooled, so I wonder if that contributes to the higher temps. Plus, my cat, who recently passed, liked to hang around my computer, and I've thought it might just need a good cleaning to remove her fur.

To see how my PC handles load, I ran Robocop Rogue City, and even at max settings, the CPU only reached about 170°F, averaging around 150-155°F. I'm confused because while my idle temps seem higher than ideal, the CPU performs well under load. Are these ideal idle temperatures accurate? Does it really matter if my idle temps are around 130-140°F?

As long as your CPU doesn't throttle under normal usage, you're good. CPUs are designed to handle high temps, so many can run safely at temperatures even up to 100°C. Still, it's nice to keep them cooler when possible! Check your CPU's specs for the max safe temperature—sometimes they can take more heat than we think.

Honestly, idle temps aren't a huge deal unless you're in a really hot climate or overclocking. If your CPU isn't throttling under load, you're probably fine. Just keep in mind that higher idle temps can reduce your headroom when you're pushing the system hard. Factors like your case airflow and ambient temperature play a big role too. If your setup is stable, don't stress too much about it!

Totally agree! As long as you’re not consistently hitting dangerous temperatures under load, it should be fine.

Yeah, I've encountered this too! Ideal temps are more of a guideline—if your CPU is working well during games and isn’t overheating, then it's likely okay. You might want to boost your cooling setup, though, just to keep everything running smoothly.

For sure! A little maintenance can go a long way. Maybe clean out some dust and check those fans.
