What Should You Check Before Sending Your First Email from a Self-Hosted Mail Server?

I'm finally setting up my own mail server using Mailcow. The installation went smoothly, and I've got Postfix, Dovecot, and Rspamd up and running. However, I'm a bit uncertain about the configurations like SPF, DKIM, DMARC, and PTR records. I've implemented them all, but I can't be sure if they're set up correctly until something goes wrong. What checklist do you recommend before I send my first real email? Have any of you experienced issues where everything looked fine but wasn't?

First things first, do a DNS lookup to see if everything is reflecting properly. Tools like MXToolbox can be super helpful for verification, so give that a go!

Definitely read up on the "postmaster" best practices from major email providers. Test your setup with a regular email account to see if your messages are marked as spam.

There are tons of ways to check DKIM and SPF. Start with MXToolbox to confirm your DNS records are right. DkimValidator is great too—it gives you a temporary email address and shows how your email appears on the receiving end. Just make sure to enforce TLS for incoming mail and have some kind of virus scanning set up.

Using online email server testing services is a great idea. Look for tools like "dkim tester". MXToolbox is a solid option. Just remember, as long as you're not sending spam, you’ll be okay.

One crucial check is to ensure you're not running an open relay. That can cause a ton of problems if it’s active!
