I'm considering upgrading my home with smart technology but want to avoid spending money on things that don't really work or end up being gimmicks. I'm looking for devices that have genuinely improved your daily routine or saved you time—extra points if they integrate well with Google Assistant or Alexa.

A smart thermostat has been a game changer for me. I used to struggle with my old one not turning on and off correctly, but now it's saving me a ton on bills! I've also got smart plugs for my lamps, including my lava lamp and reading light, which I absolutely love.
Sounds like you upgraded from a broken unit, which helps a lot! How does the internet connectivity actually help you, though?
I’m all about Google devices, smart switches, and a video doorbell for safety. Plus, I have a smart lock too—it makes it super easy when I receive packages. Family can pet sit without me worrying about hiding keys, and the face recognition feature makes grab-and-go grocery runs a breeze.
Yes! Face recognition on the door lock is such a time saver for those one-trip grocery hauls.
Totally agree! Smart locks and video doorbells have made it so much safer and easier for me as well!
Robot vacuums are a must-have! I started with a basic one, but now I have a mopping robot vacuum. Honestly, I haven't even picked up a vacuum myself since 2017!
I’ve been working with Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and Arduino to create my own IoT devices. It takes time to set up, but it's saved me a bunch of money and helped expand my skills. Not exactly time-saving in the short term, but definitely worth it in the long run!
If there weren’t any gimmicks, you probably wouldn’t need to ask this question. Just saying, there’s tons of people who refuse to admit they've bought things that turned out to be just gimmicks!
The best thing I've gotten is a WiFi garage door opener. When I'm out walking and listening to podcasts, I just use my smartphone instead of carrying keys. It's perfect—I could use my Apple Watch, but having my phone is just more convenient.
Seriously, smart thermostats and bulbs are the way to go! My Nest thermostat does exactly what I need, and my smart bulbs turn on automatically—totally convenient!
