What To Do After Falling for a Discord Malware Scam?

I fell victim to a malware scam where I clicked a link on Discord, thinking it was a game. The scammers sent me a screenshot of my email, claiming they had access to my passwords and personal information. They tried to extort me for a $100 gift card. I quickly uninstalled the malware and reset my PC completely, but now I'm really anxious about what information they might have accessed. I've been changing passwords on my phone, and I'm wondering if there's anything more I should do. Should I avoid Discord altogether, or is there a chance I can go back? What kind of data could they have accessed?

Absolutely do a scan! It's probably a relief to know that many of these scammers don't actually have the info they claim. They often just scare people with a screenshot that they might have found online. If you don’t see any suspicious logins, there's a good chance they’re just trying to coerce you into paying. Just make sure to scan for lingering malware on your PC.

I appreciate that! But I did see them remove friends and leave servers in real-time, so I’m worried they accessed something else. My PC also started running way slower during the scans.

You handled this situation pretty well! The main thing to watch out for is sensitive data like your bank info or social security number if you stored any on your computer. I wouldn’t suggest abandoning your accounts just yet, but definitely run full system scans for malware to be safe. Learning this the hard way is rough, but try not to stress too much!

Logging out of all your devices is super important. Make sure to enable multi-factor authentication on your accounts and change every password as a precaution. You did well by wiping your PC; that was a smart move!
