I'm looking to upgrade my PC but I don't have much technical knowledge about components. Currently, my setup includes an Nvidia RTX 3070Ti (8GB), an Intel Core i5-10400F processor, 32GB of DDR4 RAM, and an Asus Prime H510M-E motherboard. I'm considering either the RTX 5080 (16GB) or the RX 9070 XT (16GB). I'm not sure if I would only need to swap out the video card or if I'd have to upgrade other parts too.
I initially thought about getting the RTX 5090, but it's too expensive. The RTX 5080 is also pricey, and the RX 9070 XT is about $560 cheaper. If I end up needing a new processor, I was eyeing a Ryzen 9, but I learned that my motherboard isn't compatible. If I switch motherboards, I'd need new RAM too. I was thinking about an i9 instead, but I've heard Intel's not performing well. I want a robust setup for gaming and programming, aiming for longevity of at least 4 years. Any recommendations on upgrades? Are the performance differences significant?

If you're focused on gaming performance, going for the RX 9070 XT would offer about a 66% increase compared to your current setup. However, be aware that your older CPU will still hold back performance somewhat, though not as much as the alternatives you mentioned. If you want to enhance your overall productivity beyond gaming, consider replacing the CPU, motherboard, and RAM as well. At that point, building a new system might be a better route to take.
Honestly, the RTX 5080 doesn’t offer the best value. If you're looking for something similar, the 5070Ti might be worth considering over the 9070 XT if the price is better. Both GPUs are solid options. As for CPUs, the Ryzen 9 and i9 aren’t the best choices for gaming. Instead, I’d recommend looking into AM5 CPUs like the 7500F or 7600X for better value and performance without breaking the bank.
Yeah, I noticed the 5070Ti is more expensive than the 9070 XT for me too. Also, since I’m just starting with programming, I don’t need a heavyweight CPU like those for now. It’s frustrating trying to find the right balance between gaming and other work.
Make sure to explore your options in motherboards and RAM. Since you’ll be upgrading components, checking compatibility is crucial. If you go AM5, expect to spend a little more on RAM too since DDR5 is super pricey right now. If you already have 32GB of DDR4, it might be worth keeping that for now unless you can afford a full upgrade.
Good point! I already have a decent amount of RAM but it’s tough to keep up with these price hikes, especially for DDR5.
What’s your budget looking like? The i5-10400F you have will limit how much you can improve with a new GPU. Plus, you need to check your power supply specs since that can affect which components are viable upgrades.
I can spend up to about R$11,000 (around $2000), but with prices being so high in Brazil, I was hoping to save a bit more. I also just found out my power supply is 650W.

I’ve been in the same boat! It’s frustrating when you realize how much you need to change after investing in a good PC. It’s tempting to just upgrade one part but sometimes it ends up being a whole new build.
