What WiFi Options Should I Consider for My Son’s PC Build?

I need some advice on what to buy for my son's PC build since it doesn't have built-in WiFi capabilities. The PC was purchased from a builder, and we live in a semi-rural area in Scotland. Currently, we're on half-fiber internet, waiting for the full fiber connection to stabilize before switching. His PlayStation is next to the WiFi router, and he copes okay with slow download speeds for gaming. I read that I can either get a USB WiFi adapter, an internal WiFi card for the motherboard, or run an Ethernet cable from the router. Are there any other options I'm missing? Is the performance of the internal card significantly better than the USB option? And for someone inexperienced in PC building, is it manageable to install the card by following a YouTube tutorial? I know Ethernet is the best option but it's not ideal for our setup.

Both internal cards and USB adapters work fine! If you're looking at an internal card, just follow a YouTube video; it's usually an easy install. The benefit of a card is that it keeps your USB ports open, but if you have plenty of USB ports available, the USB option is totally viable. Also, consider getting a card that includes Bluetooth functionality—that way, you get more bang for your buck!

Installing internal cards is super simple; if you can handle a screwdriver, you can do it. However, for general home use, both internal cards and USB adaptors perform similarly. Another option is to look into "powerline Ethernet adapters." They use your home’s electrical circuitry to transmit internet signals; just plug them into outlets near the PC and the router. They work well in many cases, although results can vary depending on your home's wiring.

Quality USB adapters are also effective and usually only about $10 more than basic ones. Just make sure to pick one with a wire that runs to the antennas for better signal positioning!
