What’s a Good Alternative to Microsoft Teams for IT Support?

Hey everyone! We used to rely on Skype for our communications, but since it was phased out, we've had to switch to Microsoft Teams. Unfortunately, our experience hasn't been great. Here are the issues we're facing: unreliable notifications on iOS, Android, and Windows; presence status that doesn't accurately reflect who's online; calls that sometimes don't ring unless we access the chat; and delays in message syncing between mobile and desktop devices.

We're looking for a stable group chat solution for IT support where we can share files easily, conduct screen shares and video calls without a hitch, and receive consistent, real-time notifications across all devices.

Should we stick with Teams and hope for improvements, or are there better tools out there that sysadmins recommend for 2025? We've tried Google Chat and Meet, but they didn't work for us. Any suggestions? Thanks!

You might want to look into Element (part of the Matrix network). It's used by big organizations and offers great functionality. Just a heads up, it can be tricky on multiple devices, especially with end-to-end encryption enabled. But the flexibility of running your own server might come in handy.

Don't overlook Mattermost as an option! It's a highly customizable platform that can suit your team's chat and collaboration needs.

I have to agree, looks like there could be networking issues at play here. Things like SSL inspection or a VPN can affect connectivity in ways that might make Teams seem unreliable. If possible, try testing without those to pinpoint the problem instead of switching platforms.

It sounds like you might have a Teams setup issue. We use it extensively without any of those problems. Have you checked if it’s the O365 version or the free one? Also, consider adjusting some settings or policies to optimize its performance for your needs—you might be fighting against your setup rather than the software itself.

If you're considering alternatives, I'd recommend trying Slack. It's generally user-friendly, integrates well with other apps, and has a smoother update process. Plus, their channel system makes team collaboration really handy.
