What’s a Realistic Budget for Hiring an iOS Developer from India on UpWork?

I'm working on a product that needs to integrate OpenAI's GPT and Whisper APIs. While the overall complexity isn't too high, it essentially involves creating an app that transcribes audio and summarizes it. However, my experience on UpWork has been all over the place with estimates ranging from $2,000 to $16,000. I've had many discussions with potential developers, but every time I share a budget, they seem to just double it and try to negotiate. I've also received varying timeline estimates, from 4 weeks to 12 weeks, leaving me pretty confused.

So my question is, what kind of budget should I realistically set aside for this project? And how can I ensure I'm hiring the right developer?

Any decent developer won’t shy away from specifics. Make sure to ask for a detailed plan including things like MVP, testing phases, and API integration. Also, consider their past projects; if they've worked with GPT or Whisper before, that's definitely a good sign!

If I were in your shoes, I'd first filter candidates by asking how they would approach the app development process. Get them to outline the stages and approximate time for each. This should help you eliminate a lot of the less experienced applicants. After that, honestly evaluate your budget—if it's closer to $2,000, don't waste time with those quoting $20,000. Just be clear about what extras they can provide with their price; some might just be good at coding but not at delivering a standout product.

The budget can really vary based on the developer's experience and the project's requirements. Generally, you might find developers from India charging less than those from the West, so you might get a mixed bag of quotes. Usually, it's a good idea to have a clear requirement sheet to help estimate the number of hours needed for the task. So much depends on who you hire and what your project specifically needs!

Are you looking to just integrate APIs, or are you building the whole app? If it's mainly API integration and you have all the other pieces ready, it should realistically cost less than $2,000 and take under a week. But if you're looking to build the entire product completely, expect to pay somewhere between $5,000 and $8,000, depending on how complex it is.
