What’s the Best First Upgrade for My PC?

I'm looking to give my PC a major upgrade and could use some advice on what to tackle first. Currently, I've got an Intel Core i9-11900K processor and a PowerColor Fighter Radeon RX 6700 XT video card. My budget is around $1,000, and I primarily play CPU-intensive games like grand strategy titles (think EU4-5, Victoria 3, etc.). I'm not super tech-savvy since an old friend helped me build this machine, so I'm unsure about how to identify if I'm experiencing bottlenecking between the CPU and GPU. Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated!

When it comes to bottlenecking, it’s a bit of a puzzle. A good way to diagnose if you need an upgrade is by checking your GPU and RAM usage. If your GPU usage is over 95% consistently, you will definitely benefit from a better GPU. But if your RAM usage is consistently high, then that could be your weak link. If your GPU is often under 95%, it’s likely that your CPU is the one lagging behind.

Thanks for breaking that down! It really clarifies how to approach the bottleneck issue. I'll start checking my GPU and RAM usage!

I’d say go for a 5070 or 5070ti and enjoy those better graphics! The 11900K still performs admirably, but consider upgrading the cooler if you're using a small heatsink. You might also want to disable hyperthreading to manage heat better. You can certainly upgrade to a DDR4 12/13/14th gen setup, which could give you a decent boost, but I'm not convinced it’s worth it for just minor gains. If you're near a MicroCenter, a 7800x3d or 9800x3d combo with 32GB of RAM fits your budget and will provide the best CPU performance jump you can get. After that, you'll want to consider your GPU limitations.

I’m a bit confused—what do you mean by heatsink? I’m using a liquid cooler (Cooler Master MASTERLIQUID ML240L RGB V2) and it’s been working well. Are you suggesting the GPU needs an upgrade because my current one might bottleneck performance? How does the 5070ti compare to the RX 6700 XT?

Yeah, I’d love to know more about why the GPU will be a bottleneck and if you think upgrading is worth it. Thanks!

For your setup, the i9-11900K is one of the top CPUs for the LGA1200 platform. Any significant upgrade would mean you need a new motherboard. If you're sticking with your DDR4 memory, I'd recommend upgrading to an LGA1700 motherboard, which will run you about $90 to $170. You might consider the i7-14700K for around $350 if you want a solid CPU boost. The i9-14900K is the top option, but it doesn’t offer much more for gaming than the i7, so skip that unless you’re really committed. On the GPU side, a jump to a 9060 XT 16GB would seriously enhance performance for about $450. Just a heads-up: early LGA1700 Intel CPUs had some stability issues that have mostly been fixed with BIOS updates, so make sure to update after installation. Hope this helps!

What’s the deal with moving platforms? Is it just that newer platforms generally have better performance, or is it more about compatibility? If my platform is outdated, I'm okay waiting to save for a full rebuild to a new platform and RAM. Should I just hold off until I can afford that instead of just patching up the current setup?

I think it depends on your current needs. If you're facing significant performance issues, you might want to upgrade selectively now and then go for a full rebuild later.
