What’s the best lightweight Linux distro for an old laptop?

I'm looking to turn my 25-year-old laptop into an eBook reader, but I need a Linux distro that's lightweight and energy-efficient. The specs are pretty minimal: it has an Intel Pentium M 1.3 GHz processor, 40 GB HDD, and 256 MB of RAM (though it might support 1 GB). Any recommendations?

I think antiX can do live booting, although it takes a few steps to set up on a USB. I personally like MX Linux; it’s related to antiX and also supports live-booting, although I haven't checked if you can save changes on the USB. Just throwing that out there!

Honestly, you might want to just consider retiring that old laptop! It’s quite dated and might not be worth the time for a distro.

For a laptop with less than 1 GB of RAM, I'd recommend trying antiX. It's designed to work well on older hardware and can be installed directly from your hard drive. If you're looking for something you can boot live from a USB, Puppy Linux is also a great option!

You should definitely check out the distro selection page online for tailored advice! And don’t forget to back up your data and experiment safely!

Antix will work fine on that setup, just remember you might not be able to handle too many browser tabs or heavy applications without slowing down.
