What’s the Best Office Chair to Alleviate Back Pain? Thoughts on the Aeron?

I've recently started suffering from lower back pain due to spending long hours at my desk. As a sysadmin, I'm often sitting for many hours with only brief breaks for movement, and my current budget chair just isn't cutting it anymore. I'm looking to upgrade to something better and have a few specific requirements:

- Strong lumbar support (preferably adjustable)
- Mesh back for breathability
- Adjustable seat height and tilt
- Durable enough to last more than a year
- Budget: around $500

I've seen a lot of recommendations for the Aeron and other ergonomic mesh chairs, but I'm eager to hear about what truly works for people in IT who spend long hours in their chairs. Any suggestions for chairs that have genuinely helped with back pain?

I've had my Aeron C for 25 years and while I’ve had to replace a lumbar support piece and some castors, it's still my go-to daily chair. If you can, convince your workplace to fund one! They really stand the test of time.

Absolutely! It's great to have a chair that lasts so long. You really get what you pay for with those top brands.

Right? And it makes a huge difference when you sit for long stretches!

If you’re looking for something a bit less pricey, I recommend the Herman Miller Mira. I wasn’t a fan at first glance, but it’s grown on me and I actually prefer it over my Steelcase Leap. It’s a fantastic option if you want something that still offers great support without breaking the bank!

That's a good shout! I think I might check that one out first.

I agree! It’s a solid chair for the price.

I bought a second-hand Aeron C and have had it for 12 years. I've really loved it! While it may not be the cushiest chair I've ever sat in, my back and posture improved significantly since switching from a cheap office chair. It's super adjustable and really well made, which makes it great value. I even got another refurbished one for my office.

I'm still using a '96 Aeron, which really highlights its durability. After all these years, I've just had to make a few minor fixes and replace some parts. It’s been a solid investment for sure!

Specialty chairs may be your best bet for long-term comfort. The Aeron is popular for a reason, but don't overlook the importance of good posture and taking breaks to move around. Sometimes the way we sit causes more issues than the chair itself!
