What’s the Best VPS Option for Hosting a Website?

I'm currently a computer science student, and I've learned to build websites locally, plus I have some experience with SSH, Docker, and MySQL. An acquaintance has asked me to create a website for their project, and I've been researching web hosting options. I think Amazon Lightsail might be a solid choice, as they offer a VPS for $7 that could handle hosting around 10 websites, which is great since I may take on more projects in the future. I'd love to hear from anyone who has experience with Lightsail or can recommend a better VPS service. Also, I'm considering charging my acquaintance for the VPS cost as part of the project. Could anyone give me an idea of how much that typically costs? I was thinking of offering a friend's price, but I'm also looking for insights for future projects.

I recently signed up with DediRock, and they offer a pretty cheap deal—just $6 a year! You might want to check out some VPS price comparison sites for good options. Here's a link I found helpful: vpspricetracker.com. It could help you find something that exactly fits your needs.

I’ve used Linode for several years without problems. It's also $7 a month, and I host four portfolio projects on it without issues. It could be a solid choice if you want something reliable.

If you're just getting started, remember that AWS offers a free trial that would cover the cost of Lightsail for about six months. It's a good way to test the waters without upfront costs.

I've had a great experience running multiple VPS instances on Hetzner. If you're looking to manage Dockerized apps and databases, check out haloy.dev for easier management.

VPS is a good route, but just be ready to learn some server hardening techniques and play the sysadmin role occasionally. I've been with Linode (now Akamai) for about 15 years and usually recommend managed VPS for client sites to avoid late-night emergencies.
