What’s the Best Way for a Beginner to Program a Tactical RPG?

Hey everyone! I'm a total newbie to programming but I've been dreaming up a tactical RPG game for quite a while now. I've got a bunch of heroes and the gameplay mechanics down (think along the lines of Dofus, Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem), and it's going to be a 2D PvP game played on a grid of squares. I really want to focus on the programming first—I'll hire graphic designers later for the visuals. I recently downloaded Godot but I'm feeling completely lost, and I could use some advice on how to start learning to code. What coding language should I focus on, and what steps should I take? Any tips would be appreciated!

It's great that you're diving into game development! However, I highly recommend starting with something smaller than your tactical RPG. Even if you're not into platformers, working on simpler projects will help you learn the basics of programming. Think of it as building blocks—once you're comfortable, you can design your game mechanics. It takes time, so be patient and ready to practice. It will be rewarding once everything clicks!

Totally! Making mistakes now is part of the learning process, and it’s way less stressful than building something super complex right off the bat.
