I picked up a generic gaming mouse from a thrift store to make playing Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition more enjoyable. It has a wired connection and I plugged it into my HP laptop using USB-C. The mouse lights up and shows up in Device Manager, and the driver appears to be installed in Settings. However, I still can't get the cursor to move, even after disabling the touchpad.

Usually, USB mice should work right away since they're plug and play. If it’s not functioning, it could mean the mouse is defective or it's not actually a USB mouse; it might be wireless and only using the USB-C for charging. Since you mentioned the cable is attached, at least we know it's not wireless, but still, check if there’s a dongle somewhere that might have come with it. Your mouse might need that to connect properly.
Thrift store find, huh? That might explain things! There could be a reason it was donated. If it’s not working and given that it’s a generic mouse, it’s possible that it has issues. For a reliable option, many places like Walmart or Best Buy have new mice for under $20. Sometimes it's better to invest a little in a new one than risk getting another dud from a thrift store.
