What’s the best way to create and notify a rotating on-call schedule in Microsoft Teams?

I'm looking for an effective and affordable solution for managing our on-call schedule in Microsoft Teams. Currently, we rely on a shared calendar with all-day events to indicate who's on call, but this method often fails as people forget to check it or miss notifications. It would be great to set up something that automates reminders and messages when a switch is needed for the on-call duties, specifically directing team members to adjust their call forwarding in the PBX. Unfortunately, management won't approve using PagerDuty, so any alternative suggestions would be appreciated!

Have you thought about using Shifts? It's designed for managing schedules in Teams and could streamline the whole process for you.

It sounds like a manager should be responsible for handling the task of changing call forwarding in the PBX. They could keep a list of everyone's cell phone numbers and use a calendar reminder for this, but I know that doesn't always happen in every team!

I feel you! Most managers I've worked with believed the team should be self-sufficient and only focused on the bigger corporate stuff.

To automate this, you might want to explore using PowerShell or Microsoft Graph. Setting up Azure Automation accounts or Logic Apps could be a cost-effective way to achieve this!

Power Automate could be your go-to solution. You can set up an on-call roster in SharePoint and schedule it to pull the current on-call person and send a message to a Teams channel. You can even tag them directly and include instructions for adjusting their PBX call forwarding. Plus, scheduling personal calendar events for them could help ensure nothing slips through the cracks!

Totally! You can create a simple flow that monitors the calendar, sending emails or posting to Teams when it’s time. If you have Office E3 or E5 licenses, you probably already have what you need for this.
