What’s the Best Way to Handle Our Company’s Old IT Equipment?

I'm currently the IT department for a large wholesale company, and we're facing a huge influx of old hardware as we go through another round of refreshes. The inventory of old laptops, desktops, and peripherals is about to double, and I'm stuck on what to do with them since many have been gathering dust.

While I'd love to keep them for loaners or backups, my colleagues have left the decision to me and suggested either tossing them out or taking them to a recycling center—but it can't cost the company anything. I live in a pretty rural area with limited recycling options, mostly just a state office and one local computer company that would charge per machine. I really don't want to just throw these machines away. I'm also considering if there's a way to redistribute them to employees or donate them to families in need. How can I responsibly and ethically handle this situation?

Sounds like a tough spot! But remember, even if they say it won't cost anything, e-waste disposal can get pricey and tricky. If you’re willing to turn it into a side hustle, that could work, or you could donate the machines to local schools or charities—just be clear there’s no support or warranty involved. Communication is key!

That’s true! I’d love to help out, but I’m also cautious about legality—wouldn’t that be considered stealing?

You might want to check companies that will pick up your equipment, refurbish it, and then share the profits with you. If the devices are still functional, they can have some value! Just make sure you know what state you’re in so you can find the right service to help you out.
