What’s the best way to move my files from Windows to Linux?

I'm planning to switch over to Linux soon since I can't upgrade to Windows 11, and I've found my Steam Deck works better with it despite a bit of a learning curve. I'm leaning towards using the official Steam OS. I have tons of game mods on my current Windows setup and I'm considering my options for transferring files. Should I try to dual boot with Windows, transfer files to Linux and then wipe Windows, or just use Google Drive to facilitate my move to Linux? What would be the easiest method for a new Linux user like me?

One solid option is to get an external HDD. You can just back everything up there and move it to your Linux setup later. If you install Linux on a new drive, the installer will even set everything up for dual-booting with GRUB, so you won’t lose access to your files right away.

Also consider getting a new internal SSD while you're at it! You could backup your files to the external drive, install Linux on the SSD, and keep your Windows drive as a secondary. It makes transferring files way easier!
