I recently got a USB drive that seems to be infected with some kind of virus. The drive works fine otherwise, but I'm concerned about the risk of plugging it into my computer and potentially getting infected. What are some safe methods to completely format this drive without jeopardizing my system?

Use Diskpart on your Windows machine. After connecting the USB, launch Diskpart, list the disks and identify your USB. Just double-check that you're looking at the right drive to avoid wiping the wrong one!

But doesn’t that require plugging the USB into my computer? I want to avoid risking infection!

Consider creating a Linux live USB drive. Boot from that, which gives you an isolated environment, and then wipe the infected drive using the Linux tools. I’ve done this in the past for infected drives and it works great!

Could you share the step-by-step process? I really want to make sure I don’t mess it up.

If you're really cautious, the best approach is to destroy the drive. However, if you want to keep it, consider using Windows Defender Offline for a full scan and clean, which could help ensure it’s safe before you format it.

I appreciate the advice! I’ll try that before I give up on it.

One option is to use a different type of computer that the virus isn't designed for. For instance, if it's a Windows virus, try using a Mac, Linux machine, or even a Chromebook to format it. That way, you can keep your main system safe.

Honestly, if you're very concerned, sometimes it's easier just to throw the drive away and buy a new one. New USB drives are pretty cheap nowadays, and it might save you a headache!

I’d rather not buy a new one just for this. If I can clear it safely, I’d prefer to keep it. What do you think about the cheap Chinese copies of USBs?
