I'm picking up a second-hand motherboard tomorrow, and I want to make sure it works! Unfortunately, I won't have the CPU or other components ready by then. I do have a power supply and a method to power it on. Is there anything I can test just with the PSU? What should I look out for?

Basically, you won’t know it’s functioning until you have everything plugged in. There’s always a chance of random problems with ports or modules that you won’t see without testing the whole setup.
The most you can do without the CPU is check if the motherboard powers on and see if the error lights are functioning. I’d just wait to test it properly until you have everything set up tomorrow.
Testing a motherboard isn't straightforward. You can see if it posts, but that won’t confirm everything works perfectly. There might be issues with slots or ports that you won't know until you fully set it up with all parts.
You really can't test a motherboard effectively without a working CPU. That’s the main component you'll need. Just try to get the CPU before testing; otherwise, you're pretty limited.
You could use a voltmeter to check the traces, but honestly, that's a lot of hassle! Even if you do get it powered up, there are various functionalities you might miss out on without the other components.
True, that sounds like it could eat up a lot of time!

If I manage to get the CPU first, how should I go about testing the motherboard?
