What’s the Best Way to Use a KVM for My Work and School Laptops?

I recently got a work laptop and I want to integrate it into my home setup, which I currently use for school. I have two older Asus monitors (1080p 75Hz), speakers, and a USB hub for my peripherals. Both laptops have USB C ports and HDMI, but I'm looking to find a way to switch between them effectively without too much hassle. Any recommendations on the type of KVM or setup that would work best for me? Thanks!

I've had a similar experience, and I found that deciding between a true KVM or just switching inputs was crucial. Since both your laptops have USB C, consider getting a USB C dock for each and a USB switch for your keyboard and mouse. It’s often simpler to just change monitor inputs directly. However, if you want seamless switching, a KVM that supports dual monitors with USB input is ideal, though they can be pricey and tricky with laptops. I personally found managing video and USB separately worked better.

What did you end up choosing? A KVM sounds good, but the cost is a concern, especially if I don’t have enough monitor ports for all devices.

You might want to check out some USB hubs on Amazon that can accommodate all your devices. Just ensure both laptops support the same type of USB hub, whether it's USB 3.0 or USB-C. That way, you can easily swap the hub between the two laptops.

Do these hubs have HDMI or DisplayPort? My monitors are older, so USB-C isn't an option for me.

A KVM setup can really streamline your workflow. It sounds like a great idea for your situation. Just make sure to clarify what you mean by 'what type' so you can narrow it down to your specific needs.

Good point! It would help to know the make and model of both laptops for better suggestions.
