What’s the Smallest Server I Can Build for Gaming?

I'm looking to set up a private game server for Star Wars Galaxies and Ultima Online. The system requirements for running these games are quite minimal, and my available space is limited. Ideally, I'd like to build something really compact, possibly around the size of those Dell Optiplex 7090 boxes. I'm thinking I need around 4GB of RAM, either a Pentium 3 or a dual-core processor, and just a few gigs of storage. I plan to play from my main gaming rig.

Wait, what's SWG and UO? You might need to clarify that for those who don’t know the games.

SWG is Star Wars Galaxies and UO is Ultima Online. I mentioned the CPU, RAM, and storage requirements in my post.

You should consider the type of case you want; options like the Velka 3 are really small and stylish. You might also find the /r/sffpc subreddit inspiring for small form factor builds.

Honestly, just grab a mini PC. They are perfect for what you're looking to do without taking up much space.

Check out the Beelink micro-PCs on Amazon. They’re super compact, even smaller than a Raspberry Pi! That might fit your needs perfectly.

Thanks! I was actually wondering if a Raspberry Pi could handle it. I could easily stash that in a desk drawer.

If you want to go for a DIY option, the ASRock Deskmini is one of the smallest barebones systems you can get—around 1.9L in volume. You can fit in a Ryzen CPU, and it’s a good straightforward build! I put together a part list for it if you're interested.
