What’s Up with This Strange Phone Number That Hangs Up After 8 Seconds?

Hey, everyone! I stumbled upon this bizarre phone number, 0732 158 147, while prank calling with a friend and I'm really stumped about it. We masked our caller ID using #31# (which works in Romania), and when we called this number, it plays a really weird, high-pitched robotic sound that actually hurts my ears. What's even stranger is that every time I call it, the call drops after exactly 8 seconds.

To make matters weirder, when I call the same number without hiding my caller ID, it claims the number doesn't exist! I even reached out to some experts who create videos about old internet service provider stuff from the '90s since the sound reminds me of something from their video, but they couldn't help either. The number looks totally normal, so it doesn't seem like a prank, but I can't shake off the mystery of it.

Does anyone have any ideas about what this could be? Could it be an old system or something else unusual? I can share a recording of the sound if that helps. Thanks for your thoughts!

It sounds like you've accidentally called a fax machine. The high-pitched screech you heard is part of the initial handshake process. If a fax machine doesn't get a response in about 8 seconds, it just hangs up. Believe it or not, faxes are still used in many places like medical offices and government agencies, so it's not as odd as it seems!

That's super interesting! I had no idea fax machines still existed like that.

You might want to consider finding better hobbies than calling random phone numbers. There are plenty of much more fun things to do!

Honestly, I think it's a weird idea to prank call random numbers. But if you can, sharing the sound would definitely be cool! I'm curious to hear what it sounds like.
