When Should I Choose NVMe Over SSD for My Setup?

I've been tasked with sourcing quotes for some new hosts, which is a part of IT I'm not very familiar with. I've got the required specifications, but I'm working with a budget. Currently, we have hard drives, so switching to SSDs will definitely be an improvement. However, I'm trying to figure out if I should opt for NVMe instead of just regular SSD. I feel a bit lost and overwhelmed by all the vendor responses, and I don't want to overspend on unnecessary features. For context, two of the hosts are for running six VMs, while the other is meant for backing up data. Any advice on when NVMe is worth choosing over standard SSDs would be greatly appreciated!

NVMe drives are still SSDs; you're really comparing NVMe to other interface types like SATA or SAS. NVMe is just an interface that allows SSDs to communicate faster with your system compared to SATA. Don’t feel bad about asking questions; everyone starts somewhere, and it’s the best way to learn!

It sounds like you might be looking for the difference between NVMe SSDs and SATA/SAS SSDs. In general, NVMe offers faster speeds and lower latency, which is essential for hosts running multiple VMs. If your VMs require high performance, NVMe is the way to go. For your backup storage, a standard SSD or HDD would suffice since speed isn't as critical there.
