Which Backend Solution is Better for E-Commerce: Vendure or MedusaJS?

I'm in the process of evaluating backend solutions for multiple e-commerce sites we're launching. We currently have a medium-sized business that needs to migrate from Prestashop due to performance issues, especially under traffic loads. The client wants a solution we fully control rather than relying on something like Shopify, and since I'm skilled in JavaScript and TypeScript, I've narrowed it down to Vendure and MedusaJS. While MedusaJS caught my attention as it's popular and dubbed the 'open-source Shopify', Vendure offers an integrated approach with multi-tenancy and an admin panel that seems user-friendly for managing all stores. I'd appreciate any insights if anyone has experience with both platforms—especially anything recent about Vendure since there's not much out there.

In my view, Medusa is architecturally stronger and adaptable to custom business needs, though I found their documentation a bit lacking during their version updates. If they resolved those issues, it could be a great option for you.

I haven’t personally used Vendure, but I've had a great experience with MedusaJS. The development experience has definitely improved, especially with new features making it easier to set up the CMS elements you might need.

Your excitement about Medusa is noted, but your history seems heavily skewed toward it. Just saying!

As someone from the Medusa team, I can say that our platform is capable of running several stores from a single backend, with our Sales Channel feature helping create unique pricing and promotions per channel. Feel free to check out our docs for more depth on this, and don't hesitate to reach out in our community if you have any questions!

Both platforms are solid if you're a JS developer, but it really boils down to your preference for structure versus flexibility. Vendure is great for complex operations and offers a more enterprise-ready setup with great GraphQL support, while MedusaJS is more modular and easier to customize for quick developments. If strict customization isn't your goal, Vendure might suit you better since it offers a more familiar experience for your client.

Exactly what I was thinking! Vendure seems like a better fit to ease the transition for the client.

If having a multi-store setup under one admin is crucial for you, Vendure's channels model does this quite well right off the bat. It tends to have a more structured, enterprise-friendly vibe thanks to its NestJS and GraphQL integration, making it easier for the long haul. MedusaJS has a larger ecosystem, but managing multiple stores might require more custom work and possibly a separate CMS.

Thanks! That makes sense. I think I'll try building a basic storefront on both to get a feel for their admin features.
