I'm building my first PC and plan to use it mainly as a NAS that will run 24/7. However, I also want to use it occasionally for home and office tasks, plus some moderate gaming. For now, I won't be using a dedicated graphics card, but I plan on adding one later.
I'm looking for a CPU that excels at both server-type productivity tasks and gaming when needed. Here are my preferences:
- Good number of cores/threads
- Reliable for long-term use (around 7-8 years)
- Stable for always-on usage
- Integrated graphics would be great for now
- Allows for tweaking since I plan to undervolt it
My choices so far are:
- Ryzen 7 7700X
- Ryzen 7 9700X
- Ryzen 9 7900X
- i5 14600K
I realize these may be a bit of overkill, but my budget is around $380. Power consumption isn't a concern for me; I want something solid, flexible, and long-lasting. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Have a great day!

All those CPUs are solid picks, but it really comes down to your budget and the current prices. They each have their strengths and can serve you well in both productivity and gaming.
Between the options, I'd choose the 14600K over the 7900X. If you're looking for higher performance, consider the 250K or even 270K models, as they include a solid integrated GPU.
I would lean towards the i5 14600K; it's the strongest performer for core-dependent tasks right now, especially compared to the 9900X, which is also a good option.
Thanks for that tip! I’m leaning towards Team Blue too, but I was a bit confused by how the 14600K stacks up against the 9900X.

True! They’re pretty close in price; the difference is often less than $20.
