I'm in the process of building a new PC and I'm stuck between two options: the Intel Core i9 14900k and the AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. Both are priced the same in my area, but I want to make sure I choose the right one for my needs. My primary use will be gaming, but I also do quite a bit of video rendering and encoding, primarily using Adobe Premiere and Photoshop. I frequently use AI tools like Stable Diffusion and Topaz, although I know the GPU is more crucial for those tasks. I'm also a bit of a multitasker, often with 100 browser tabs open while gaming.
Here's what I have planned so far for my build:
- ASRock z790 Taichi Motherboard
- Intel Core i9 14900k
- G.SKILL Trident 96GB RAM, 6800MHz CL34
- RTX 5090
- Lian Li EDGE 1300W PSU
- ARCTIC Liquid Freezer III Pro 360 Cooler
I'm leaning towards the i9 for its capability as an all-rounder, but I've read that the 9800X3D has exceptional gaming performance. I'm really confused about whether the slight gaming advantage of the 9800X3D is worth going for it instead and switching my motherboard. What do you all think?

If gaming is your main focus, the 9800X3D is generally the better choice, especially for efficiency and performance in games. That being said, if you want a processor that handles multiple tasks well and offers solid performance in video editing too, the i9 14900K might be more suitable. It really depends on what you'll prioritize more!
You mentioned multitasking with a ton of browser tabs open. Intel's architecture may give you some edge there, but if gaming performance is at the forefront, go for the 9800X3D.
Good point! I’ve been eyeing the multi-tasking capabilities while gaming. Maybe the i9 is the way to go after all.
Definitely check out the Ryzen 9 9950X3D as another option. It might be pricier, but it could be worth it for its overall performance in mixed-use scenarios.
Yeah, but the price hike for the 9950X3D could be overkill for a lot of people, including me. I'd probably stick with the 9800X3D.
If you're game-focused and don't mind AMD’s quirks, the 9800X3D does have the best gaming metrics at the moment. Just remember, each has its strengths, and the i9 can leverage Intel's Quick Sync for video work, which can be a big help!
That’s true! Quick Sync is a big deal for video encoding. Might lean me towards the Intel side.
Totally agree! If you're balancing gaming with other workloads, the i9 might hold up better in the long run.
