I'm deciding between the Ryzen 5 7600 and the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for a gaming setup with an RTX 5070. My monitor supports 2K resolution at 180 Hz, and I'm torn if the 7800X3D is too much for my needs, as I think the 7600 might suffice. Additionally, I want to know if the 7800X3D can work well with a high-end air cooler like the Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE, or if I really should go for water cooling. I primarily play shooters and story-driven games at 2K, so any advice would be appreciated! Here's a link for the build I'm considering: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/HmtGrM

If the price difference isn't too steep, definitely opt for the 7800X3D! You won't regret it in the long run.
Honestly, the Ryzen 7600 is more than enough for your setup. I have that combo too with the RTX 5070, and it runs great at 1440p, mainly for single-player games. But if you can afford the 7800X3D, I'd say go for it. You'll get better performance, especially in dynamic scenes with 1% lows, for a smoother overall experience.
If you're mostly playing shooters and want those high frame rates at competitive settings, you might notice a difference. But with the RTX 5070, you're generally fine without going overboard on the CPU.
Both the Phantom Spirit and the Peerless Assassin are excellent choices. The Peerless Assassin is highly praised and is one of the favorites. That said, the Spirit has slightly better thermal performance, thanks to an extra heat pipe. Either cooler will do a great job, but go with the one that fits your build best!
As always, just go for the best you can afford. It’s definitely worth the investment, especially in gaming.

I actually use the Peerless Assassin on my 7800X3D, and it works perfectly. I undervolted it, and now it idles around 40°C, while gaming it hits about 60-70°C with benchmarks peaking around 80°C.
